Hilltop Theatre Proudly Present The Lion in Winter

The Lion in Winter by James Goldman

Christmas 1183, and King Henry II is planning to announce his successor to the throne. The jockeying for the crown, though, is complex. Henry has three sons and wants his boy Prince John to take over. Henry's wife, Queen Eleanor, whom Henry has kept imprisoned for plotting against him, has other ideas. She believes their son Prince Richard should be king. They all gather for a family Christmas in Chinon cast including the King of France young 17 year old Philip and his older sister Alais who is Henry's Mistress. As Henry says to Alais, " ...Try; you can hear the thinking through the walls. There's Geoffrey, humming treachery and Richard, growling out for gore and Eleanor, she's thinking heavy thoughts like molten lead and marble slabs. My house is full of intellectual activity". With sparkling, witty dialogue along with high drama this play was made into an Oscar winning film with Katherine Hepburn and Peter O'Toole. With our own splendid cast including Graham Perkins and Bella Kemble, this is not one to be missed
